Psychological therapy is the opportunity to talk with a professionally trained psychologist who can offer support, advice and new perspectives on your issues.

All our psychologists have over a minimum of

counselling individuals, couples and groups on a range of personal and work-related issues. Their aim is to aid you in creating a meaningful life and relationships for yourself and to find solutions and alleviate distress.

Common reasons why our clients access the services of one of our psychologists:

  • Living with an acquired brain injury or a neurological condition
  • Create and maintain healthy relationships
  • Improve parenting skills
  • Manage depression and anxiety
  • Manage stress and improve resilience
  • Help dealing with grief, loss and personal trauma
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Manage anger
  • Manage conflict at work (e.g. bullying)

The goal of our psychological therapy is to assist you to assume control of your life by developing new perspectives and understanding; resolving issues and making decisions; dealing with uncomfortable feelings and emotions; managing difficult emotional experiences effectively; exploring personal resources and developing new skills. While therapy is not a magic cure, it can clarify problems, help in their resolution and provide support in painful and difficult times.

  • The Method

The Gottman Method is an approach to couples’ therapy that includes a thorough assessment of the couple relationship and integrates research-based interventions based on the Sound Relationship House Theory.

The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

    Assessment

Couples who enter into therapy begin with an assessment process that then informs the therapeutic framework and interventions.

After the initial intake session, the assessment phase comprises of a joint session and 2 individual sessions, followed by another joint session to receive detailed feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your relationship. Individually, you will each also complete a set of questionnaires developed by the Gottman Institute to assist in assessing the relationship at different times during the therapy process. At the end of the feedback session you and your psychologist will decide on the frequency and duration of the sessions as well as the specific goals for the therapeutic intervention phase.

  • Therapeutic interventions

Interventions are designed to help you strengthen your relationship in three primary areas: friendship, conflict management, and creation of shared meaning. You learn to replace negative conflict patterns with positive interactions and to repair past hurts. Interventions designed to increase closeness and intimacy are used to improve friendship, deepen emotional connection, and create changes which enhances your shared goals. Relapse prevention is also addressed.
